MAI Image 2.7 Preview: Microsoft's Editor Hits #2

Introduction
Microsoft AI just shipped MAI Image 2.7 in preview, and it's an unusual launch: it's an image editing model first, with text-to-image promised "soon." It's closed weights, it comes from the MAI team behind MAI-Image-2.6, and you can try it today in MAI Playground, on Arena, and on Artificial Analysis.
The headline is the leaderboard. Microsoft says 2.7 debuts at No. 2 on Artificial Analysis' image editing leaderboard and No. 3 on Arena's image edit board, which makes Microsoft AI the No. 2 lab there. Artificial Analysis lists it at 1,193 Elo, just behind OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst (max) and ahead of GPT Image 2.5 Flare.
What It's Good At
Microsoft is pitching 2.7 at the edits that usually go sideways:
- Restyle or relight a whole scene while keeping the subject recognizable.
- Change text and symbols inside an image so the new lettering still looks printed, painted, or lit like the original.
- Restore and enhance old or rough assets.
- Reasoning-based edits, where the model has to understand how objects, light, and environment fit together, like moving a product into a new setting.
Per Microsoft's launch post, 2.7 improves on 2.6 across all 10 use cases and all 7 editing actions Artificial Analysis tests. Its chart shows three categories jumping to No. 1: reasoning-based edits (from No. 7), scene and style edits (from No. 7), and text or symbol edits (from No. 6). The biggest margin is in scene and style, where it sits 24 Elo ahead of the next-best model. Those figures come from an Artificial Analysis snapshot dated Oct 22, so treat the exact gaps as a moment in time.
Where to Run It Today
- MAI Playground:
playground.microsoft.ai. Check that the model picker actually shows 2.7 for edits, since the launch link still points at a 2.6 route. - Arena: the image edit battles at
arena.ai. - Artificial Analysis: the image editing arena at
artificialanalysis.ai.
What's missing: there's no Microsoft Foundry deployment, no public API, and no published pricing for 2.7 yet. Foundry still lists MAI-Image-2.6 and 2.6-Flash as the latest MAI image models you can call. If you're building a pipeline, keep 2.6 in place and watch for a 2.7 model version string.
A Prompt to Test It
Grab a plain product photo and paste this into the edit box. It hits relighting, scene change, and text editing at once, which is exactly where 2.7 claims its lead:
Move this product onto a rain-slick rooftop café table at blue hour, with soft lilac and aqua neon reflections on the wet surface and a warm gold rim light from the left. Keep the product's exact shape, label layout, and colors. Change the label text to "NIGHT BLOOM" in the same font style, printed naturally on the packaging with matching lighting and reflections. Then run the same edit on Nano Banana or GPT Image 2.5 in Arena and compare how well each keeps the label crisp.

Conclusion
MAI Image 2.7 is Microsoft's strongest bid yet for the editing crown: editing-first, near the top of both major boards, and free to poke at right now. The catch is that it's playground-only for the moment, so it's a creator's toy today and a builder's tool once the API and text-to-image land. I'll be watching for both.
