Introduction

Midjourney is opening a side door for AI agents. On October 10, the image lab announced it wants to start testing a Midjourney MCP with a limited community, and it posted an application form for a closed test group. MCP is short for Model Context Protocol, the plug-in standard that lets assistants like Claude or ChatGPT call outside tools. A Midjourney MCP would let your chat agent drive Midjourney's models for you.

This is a preview, not a launch. Nobody can plug it in yet unless Midjourney picks them, but the application itself tells us a lot about where this is heading.

What Midjourney announced

  • Product: Midjourney MCP (Midjourney)
  • Modality: image generation through an MCP server for AI assistants
  • Weights: closed, Midjourney-hosted
  • Status: limited community test group, apply by form
  • Who it's for: "creative and technical people to push the boundaries of what our models can do"
  • Who it's not for: Midjourney says it is not for Midjourney in SaaS products, only for "purely artistic and creative endeavors"

So if you were hoping to wire Midjourney into an app you sell, this test isn't that. It's aimed at artists and tinkerers who want an agent in the loop.

What the application asks

The form is short, and its questions hint at the shape of the product:

  • Which LLMs you'd use it with: the choices are Claude, ChatGPT, GLM, DeepSeek, Kimi, Mistral, Qwen and Cursor, so Midjourney is planning for a wide spread of agents, open and closed.
  • Your current plan: Basic ($10/mo), Standard ($30/mo), Pro ($60/mo), Mega ($120/mo) or none.
  • Expected volume: from 1 to 10 images a week up to more than 1,000.
  • What it's for: personal projects, professional work, or a startup.
  • The most you'd pay for MCP access later: options run from $10 a month up to $1,000 a month, and Midjourney notes that price would include baseline credits.
  • Past work: a portfolio, X or Instagram profile, site or GitHub link, which Midjourney flags as important for selection.

That pricing question is the juiciest detail. It suggests MCP access may become its own paid tier with bundled credits rather than just riding on your current plan.

How to apply

  1. Open the Midjourney MCP application.
  2. Pick the assistants you actually use, since that helps them test real setups.
  3. Be specific about the creative project you'd run through an agent. Midjourney says the "what do you want to do" answer matters for selection.
  4. Link your strongest past work.

Why it matters for makers

An MCP turns image generation into something an agent can plan around. Picture asking Claude to storyboard a short film, then letting it prompt, rerun and sort every frame in Midjourney without you copying prompts back and forth. Other creative tools have already gone this route through MCP connectors, and Midjourney joining the club would put one of the most loved aesthetic engines inside those same agent workflows.

We don't yet know the tool list, the rate limits, whether video is included, or when a wider rollout lands. Treat every detail beyond the form as unconfirmed until Midjourney publishes docs.

Conclusion

Midjourney is testing the waters for agent-driven art, and the application reads like a market survey for a future paid tier. If you've got a project that would shine with an assistant steering the brush, now's the moment to raise your hand. I'll be watching for the docs, and I'll bring them to you the second they land.
