Midjourney Thinking Mode Reruns Hard Prompts

Introduction
Midjourney just invited everyone on Alpha to poke a new brain. On October 8, 2026, the team posted Testing Thinking Mode and flipped on a public test of Thinking Mode for image generation on alpha.midjourney.com. It is not a new model version. It is a smarter rerun: Midjourney looks at a finished job, finds where it missed your prompt, and generates again with extra thinking time.
If you have ever watched a gorgeous Midjourney frame ignore half your text, botch a sign, or warp a hand, this is the button they want you to try.
What shipped
- Name: Thinking Mode (also labeled Rerun (Thinking) in the UI)
- Vendor: Midjourney
- Modality: closed image generation / prompt-faithful rerun
- Access: Alpha website only — not Discord, not the classic create page
- Where to run it today: open a job lightbox on alpha.midjourney.com, then click Rerun (Thinking) in the lower right
- Concrete fact: Midjourney says early tests improve prompt accuracy, typography, and coherence, and the Alpha changelog notes it works on jobs made with V8.2 (standard and edit)
How to try it
- Generate (or open) an image on Alpha with V8.2.
- Open the lightbox for that job.
- Click Rerun (Thinking) in the lower-right corner.
- Wait while the model re-reads the image, spots misses (wrong objects, layout, anatomy, text), and regenerates.
Midjourney's own reply on X puts the idea in plain language: it reruns the prompt and spends some time thinking about how it could be better.
Why it matters
Most image models improve by shipping a bigger checkpoint. Midjourney is also experimenting with a second pass that spends more compute when the first pass was almost right. Office-hour notes from early October already hinted that Thinking Mode can help hard prompts more than a hasty V9 swap for some cases — and that V9 testing may wait while this direction gets a public workout.
For creators, that means a practical loop: draft fast, then spend a Thinking rerun on the shots that need legible type, tighter composition, or fewer "wait, that wasn't in the prompt" surprises.
Shared folders (same Alpha drop)
The same October 7/8 Alpha changelog also launched shared folders for collaboration: invite people as Collaborators or Viewers, generate into a shared folder, or share by link. Collaboration does not change image privacy — non-stealth images can still appear on Explore — so treat folders as a studio shelf, not a vault.
Limits to keep in mind
- This is an early public test. Midjourney wants examples of where it helps and where it does not, ideally in
#ideas-and-features. - Thinking Mode is a rerun path, not a free always-on toggle for every generation yet. Broader "add more thinking" controls are on the maybe list.
- You need Alpha access and a V8.2 job to start from.

Conclusion
Thinking Mode is Midjourney asking creators to stress-test a second brain on Alpha: same job, more deliberation, cleaner text and coherence when the first pass almost stuck the landing. Open a V8.2 lightbox, hit Rerun (Thinking), and tell them what still breaks — that feedback is exactly why the button is public today.
