Introduction

If you’ve been watching the Qwen image stack, the naming can feel like two weather systems colliding: Qwen-Image-3.0-Pro is the polished Model Studio API we covered earlier, while Qwen-Image 2.1 is the open-weights lineage asking for hands-on stress testers.

Today that second weather system got loud.

posted that Qwen-Image 2.1 is going open source, and they’re opening 50 early-access spots before the public release. The operational details live in a companion note from
—same model name, same seat count, with a concrete application form and a publish-by deadline.

Update — Sep 20, 2026 (MYT)

Three days after the EA call, ModelScope spun up the official model home for the open drop:

Clear-eyed status as of this update (afternoon MYT, Sep 20):

  • This is a pre-release landing page, not a downloadable weight dump yet. ModelScope’s own card still says to “like and get notified” for when Qwen-Image-2.1 is open-sourced, then return to the same URL for the model.
  • The pre-release payload clocks a ReleaseDate of 2026-09-20T13:00:00.000Z — that’s Sep 20, 2026, 21:00 MYT (UTC+8). Treat it as the official countdown on the card, not a guarantee that mirrors will be hot the second the clock flips.
  • Card tagline: 高效创作，自由编辑 (“efficient creation, free editing”). The Chinese intro frames 2.1 as unifying high-quality generation + flexible editing, with an eye on performance and inference efficiency.
  • Stated highlights (paraphrased from the official Introduce copy): efficient image generation (quality + speed + lighter design) and flexible creative control (diverse image I/O and local/partial editing in one workflow — from fresh scenes to complex composition tweaks).
  • Planned artifact id on the card: Qwen/Qwen-Image-2.1. Pre-release star/notify count was already in the ~300 range when we checked.
  • Still missing for a true open-weights scoop: public license text, parameter count / VRAM notes, Hugging Face mirror, and any GitHub Qwen-Image changelog line naming 2.1. A probe of huggingface.co/Qwen/Qwen-Image-2.1 did not return a public model card as of this writing.

So: the public portal and clock are official; the weights are not public yet. Bookmark the ModelScope URL, star for notify if you want the ping, and keep the EA publish deadline (Sep 28, 23:59 MYT) on your calendar if you got a seat.

Different lane reminder unchanged: 3.0-Pro remains the hosted Model Studio product (our earlier scoop); 2.1 is the open-weights path this page is warming up.

What Was Actually Announced

Two official posts, one clear arc:

  • Open source coming — Qwen Developers’ framing is explicit: 2.1 will go open source; early access is the on-ramp before that drop.
  • 50 seats — ModelScope caps the EA cohort at fifty “experienced creators and developers.”
  • Apply via DingTalk form — the shared application is titled Qwen-Image-2.1 EA Program Application (form link). You’ll need a ModelScope profile URL, a contact email, your intended testing focus, and the social URL where you’ll publish.
  • Publish-or-bust requirement — selected testers must ship at least one original showcase or hands-on review on social media by September 28, 2026, 23:59 (UTC+8 / MYT). ModelScope specifically invites honest takes—“glowing or critical.”
  • Email onboarding — if you’re in, they reach out by email with instructions and a private community invite. No public HF/ModelScope weight dump for 2.1 yet as of the original Sep 17 writing; treat EA as closed beta, not “weights are live.” (See the Sep 20 Update above for the new ModelScope countdown card.)

Media on the ModelScope EA card was a bright promo graphic (“Qwen-Image-2.1 Early Access / LIMITED TO 50 USERS”) with the Qwen bear at a drawing tablet—cute packaging, serious scarcity.

Not the Same Story as 3.0-Pro

Worth a sunny clarification so nobody applies to the wrong door:

  • Qwen-Image-3.0-Pro — hosted / Model Studio product path. We covered it in Qwen-Image-3.0-Pro Hits Model Studio.
  • Qwen-Image 2.1 — open-source-bound line + ModelScope early access (and now a timed ModelScope pre-release card). That’s this dispatch.

Qwen-Image 2.0 already shipped as a unified generate+edit foundation (see the 2.0 tech report and QwenCloud’s 2.0 model page). 2.1 is the next open-source step in that family—not a rebrand of 3.0-Pro. If your goal is local weights, LoRAs, and Comfy graphs, this page is the URL to watch. If you just need a hosted API today, 3.0-Pro remains the other lane.

Who Should Apply (and What to Promise)

ModelScope is screening for people who will actually publish. That is the program’s quality filter—not a vanity waitlist.

Strong fits:

  • Creators who already ship image-gen showcases on X, Reddit, Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok
  • Developers who can run structured A/B notes (typography, edit fidelity, long prompts, Chinese/English text rendering)
  • Workflow builders who will wire the model into real pipelines once weights land

Application checklist from the form:

  1. ModelScope profile URL (full browser address)
  2. Email you actually check
  3. Intended testing focus (be specific: posters, character consistency, bilingual signage, edit loops…)
  4. Social profile URL for the Sep 28 deliverable

Deadline math: from the Sep 17 announcement to Sep 28 23:59 MYT is roughly eleven days after selection emails land—so plan a review outline before you apply, not after.

What We Still Don’t Know

Stay honest with the fog—even with the ModelScope card live:

  • Exact license, parameter count, and VRAM footprint for the open drop
  • Whether EA builds match the eventual public weights 1:1
  • Day-0 ComfyUI / Diffusers / Hugging Face mirror support (likely community-fast once hashes appear)
  • Whether the 21:00 MYT ReleaseDate ships weights on the minute, or just flips the card from pre-release to published
  • How “experienced” is scored on the EA application—ModelScope didn’t publish a rubric beyond the seat count and publish requirement

Conclusion

Qwen-Image 2.1 now has both a clear open-source promise and an official ModelScope countdown card pointed at Sep 20, 21:00 MYT—plus the original tiny EA gate (fifty seats, public review by Sep 28, 2026 MYT). Different lane from 3.0-Pro—this one is for people who want weights on disk.
