Introduction

Seedance just went to the big screen. On October 23, ByteDance's Volcano Engine officially released Seedance 2.5 4K, a closed video generation model that takes the Seedance 2.5 family to 4K with 10-bit color depth. Per IT Home and Yicai reporting, Volcano Engine calls it the strongest model of the 2.5 generation, with targeted training on facial expressions, subtle movements and fine detail, and it is built around a Draft mode: sketch the shot at 480p, then render the final at 4K.

The catch: 4K is currently an enterprise trial. Per Sina Tech reporting (via IT Home), the first batch is bound to specific productions and goes to 20 studios and directors worldwide, and Volcano Engine says access may expand gradually later. The Draft-first workflow is live today, though. Seedance 2.5 on Volcano Ark already supports it, so you can start building the habit now. ✨

Why 10-bit matters

8-bit video gives you 256 shades per channel. 10-bit gives you 1,024. That is the difference between a dusk sky that bands into stripes and one that fades smoothly, and it gives colorists real room to grade. Volcano Engine is pitching this squarely at big-screen film and TV work, not phone-sized clips.

Draft Mode: Usable Today on Seedance 2.5

The most practical part of this release is the workflow, and it is not locked behind the trial. Volcano Ark's Seedance 2.5 docs (model ID doubao-seedance-2-5-260628) already describe a two-step flow:

  • Step 1: create a normal generation task with draft: true. Drafts render only at 480p, and token usage and unit price match a regular 480p clip.
  • Step 2: create another task that references the Draft task ID. The final reuses the draft's model, prompt, references, seed, audio setting, aspect ratio, duration and task type, so what you approved is what you get. Those reused fields must not be sent again, or the request errors.
  • The docs currently allow only 1080p for finals made from a draft. 4K finals are, per the launch reports, limited to trial customers.
  • Draft task IDs expire after 7 days (counted from created_at), and the two steps are billed separately.

Seedance 2.5 itself handles 4–30 second clips, up to 50 references per call (30 images, 10 videos, 10 audio), timestamp-based editing, extension, and native audio. One limit to know: Ark doesn't accept reference images or videos that show real human faces directly. Use the platform's portrait options instead.
